                   Dreams                   

"In deep sleep there are no thoughts, and there is no world. In the states of waking and dream, there are thoughts, and there is a world also. Waking is long and a dream short; other than this there is no difference." Sri Ramana Maharishi

     What is a dream and where does it come from? What does it tell us? Objectively, the body falls into a calm and unconscious state. Subjectively, the mind is no longer aware of the sleeping body and produces dreams. Dreams are various imaginations created by the mind independent of sensory perception at a time when the body is relaxing, and the mind is also replaying certain percepts in order to purify itself in its own special way. The stories are therefore one's own experiences specially distorted. A regular dream is thus a mere imagination projected by a resting mind, no more and no less. We probably dream in order for the mind to have some entertainment of its own and leave the body alone to rest for a while.
     I have had several dreams in my life so far that could be called mystic. I experienced certain situations in them. Their acquaintance has been very useful to me on my spiritual path. I have had to find the proper benefits by myself, in the right time and connecting these experiences with the advises of many sages. That does not mean, however, that the stories I lived in the dreams were real, but they were interesting and very important states and situations. Their acquaintance I would not have been able to achieve so easily by any other way.
     Where these stories came from, I cannot tell. It is hard to define precisely how the unnatural is involved in producing an imagination in the mind. We can hardly discover whether they are coded genetically or handed down by some extrasensory mechanism. One needs to understand, however, that whatever appears in the imagination is but a passing thought, a picture. The important thing is to find your true Self, the source and observer of all thoughts and stories, and to abide in absolute peace within it.
