Is My Life Directed by Fate or My Own Will?

"The Ordainer controls the fate of souls in accordance with their prarabdha karma (previous deeds). Whatever is destined not to happen will not happen, try as you may. Whatever is destined to happen will happen, do what you may to prevent it. This is certain. The best course, therefore, is to remain silent." Šrν Ramana Maharishi

     People are often convinced that they direct their own life by their own will. Unfortunately, an objective view of life must agree with the wise. All that happens in a life is just the result of a co-operation of many past events. All that one experiences now is but a consequence of past actions and the present action shall become the cause for what happens in the future. Most of the events that have produced one's current situation were beyond one's will influence. Each of us can influence their immediate surroundings, but even such influence depends on the current conditions. Who thinks of themselves as the creator of their fate, will naturally suffer from unfulfilled desires or slowly adjust their desires to the situation. In either case, their wrong notion will bring them many needless difficulties.
     Is there any freedom left then? Yes there is. It is the ultimate freedom. Everyone can achieve liberation from his mind's mistakes and abide in a state where none of the events in the world perceived by the mind will disturb the serene mind. That is the only freedom a being has. To accept everything that appears in the mind calmly, and abide in permanent happiness independent of the perceived imagination. Fate rules over our bodies in the material world, but it is powerless in preventing one from achieving the ultimate knowledge. The only enemy is our ignorance, our ego.
